about "Discover math and science now" and ms. day Lanoue
Discover Math and Science Now has been set up to keep students and parents/guardians informed - about the topics being covered in class, about the homework being assigned, and about upcoming assignments, quizzes, and tests. In addition to this website, videos shown in class and/or supplement course content can be found at:
https://www.youtube.com/user/DiscoverScienceNow/playlists
Lessons, laboratories, assignments and tests are presented and graded in a format designed to encourage inquiry and to connect the ideas to the world we live in. At the start of each new unit, students receive a unit outline that details the learning objectives for that unit and what resources are provided to meet the learning objectives as prescribed by the BC Ministry of Education. Students are given many opportunities to improve their math and science skills through both formative and summative assessment strategies. Finally, woven into the content of each course a tool-box of strategies will be used to assist the students' general learner skills such as time-management, study strategies, and technology integration.
A bit about me. Ms. Day Lanoue (Ms. Day for short) has been at Handsworth Secondary since 2015, teaching both math and science courses. She is a graduate from the University of Guelph (Ontario) with an Honours Bachelor's degree in Biology with Chemistry and Biomedical (Toxicology) minors. Prior to obtaining her Bachelor of Education at SFU, she worked as a Teaching Assistant, helping adult students in Biology, Math, Science, Chemistry and English as they worked towards their high school education diplomas. She enjoys working with students, helping them to understand and explain the fascinating and sometimes challenging world of math and science. Prior to entering the field of education in 2011, she spent 10+ years coaching adults during a successful career within the food manufacturing industry, educating employees and customers of all levels and skills about food safety, baking science, sugar refining, new product development, and environmental science.
